2006 NCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND - Three different goal scorers propel Wheaton to 3-0 shutout over HussonNovember 11, 2006 NORTON, MA- Three different goal scorers lifted the Wheaton College women's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout over Husson College during Saturday's opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Mirrione Stadium. The Lyons improved to 21-1-1 while extending their unbeaten streak to 19 games, which matches the third-longest stretch in program history. Wheaton will face the winner of a first round game between Amherst College and Kean University Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for the right to advance to next weekend's sectional semifinal. Husson, which had its program-best win streak of 13 games come to an end today, finishes its season at 17-4-1. Wheaton juniors Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) and Jenna Stiegler (Madison, WI/Middleton), and sophomore Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) each accounted for a goal, with Stiegler picking up the game-winner thanks to her header off of a junior Erin Davis (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) corner kick at 37:03. Nearly six minutes later, a shot from freshman Abby Isaac (Larchmont, NY/Proctor Academy) that hit the left post and trickled across the goal mouth was recovered by Konopka, who one-timed her rebound into the lower corner of the net for a 2-0 advantage. Husson senior goalkeeper Leah Drew (Caribou, ME/Caribou), who made a huge save with 8:30 to play in the opening half, finished the first stanza with 10 stops to keep the Eagles within striking distance. Drew and the Husson defense also came up big early in the second stanza, stopping consecutive point-blank shots from Konopka to keep the game at 2-0. However, the Lyons extended their lead in the 67th minute, as Viscomi tracked down a deflection off freshman Lyndsey McManus' (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) free kick and knocked home her team-leading 12th goal of the season. The Eagles' best chance to get on the scoreboard came with just over four minutes to play, when sophomore Shelby Pickering (Lee, ME/Lee Academy) drove her shot toward the upper right corner of the target, only to be stopped by the outstretched reach of Wheaton junior keeper Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown). Kronenberg, who relieved classmate Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) to begin the second half, finished with two stops. Cockburn went untested through the first 45 minutes. Drew was credited with 13 saves in the loss, as the Lyons outshot the Eagles, 35-8 with a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. 1st Half: WC- Jenna Stiegler (Erin Davis) 37:03, Lauren Konopka (Abby Isaac) 43:01 2nd Half: WC- Angelamaria Viscomi (Lyndsey McManus) 66:27 Goalie Saves: WC- Elana Cockburn (45:00) 0, Stacey Kronenberg (45:00) 2; HC- Leah Drew 13 Shots: WC- 35; HC- 8 This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
