Davis caps big week with first NEWMAC player-of-the-week honor

November 6, 2006

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's soccer standout Erin Davis (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) earned her first career New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player-of-the-Week honor for the week ending on Sunday, November 5.

Davis, a junior back, played an integral role as Wheaton won its sixth NEWMAC Tournament championship and drew its seventh NCAA Tournament berth. During the week, the Lyons' co-captain was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic College Division All-District I third team for the second straight season.

During Wheaton's 2-2 double-overtime semifinal draw with Babson College on Saturday, Davis launched a corner kick that was converted for the 72nd-minute game-tying goal, rallying the Lyons from a 2-0 deficit. Following a pair of scoreless overtime sessions, Davis netted the clinching tally during a 4-1 shootout victory that sent Wheaton into the championship game. Wheaton earned a 3-0 victory over Smith College in the title game, as Davis recorded the first game-winner of her career in the 60th minute.

With the 1-0-1 weekend, the Lyons pushed their NEWMAC unbeaten streak to 76 games. At 20-1-1, Wheaton has stretched its overall undefeated run to 18 games, the fifth-longest in program history. The Blue and White has 20 wins for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.

As one of only two Lyons to start all 22 games, Davis has provided two goals and six assists while anchoring a defense that has yielded only 12 goals during 2,000 minutes (0.54 goals against average) in front of three different keepers. Wheaton has notched 14 shutouts and held 18 opponents to one goal or less. During her career, Davis has started 71 of a possible 73 games while helping the Blue and White to 53 shutouts.

The Lyons, who are ranked 10th nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), take on Husson College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday in Mirrione Stadium at 11:00 a.m. A win vaults the Lyons into the second round at home with either Amherst College or Kean University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
