Seven different goal scorers lead Wheaton in 8-0 win over Mount HolyokeOctober 24, 2006 NORTON, MA- Seven different goal scorers led the ninth-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team to an 8-0 victory over visiting Mount Holyoke College during Tuesday afternoon's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season finale at Mirrione Stadium. Finishing the regular season with a 9-0 conference mark and 18-1 overall record, Wheaton extended its winning streak to 15 games and its NEWMAC unbeaten stretch to 73 games, which now stands second for longest such streaks in the NCAA annals. The Lyons entered today's game ranked ninth in the country and second in the region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Mount Holyoke fell to 2-12-1 and 1-7-1. Wheaton, which held a 5-0 halftime lead and 7-0 advantage just 3:03 into the second frame, was led by senior Bridget Furlong (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport), junior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) and sophomore Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North), who each tallied a goal and an assist. Junior Jenna Stiegler (Madison, WI/Middleton) scored in the fifth minute with a corner-kick goal from classmate Erin Davis (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow). Exactly 10 minutes later, junior Katelyn Brack (Lake Oswego, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) gave Wheaton a 2-0 edge with her penalty-kick tally into the lower left corner of the net. Konopka and Furlong scored during a 2:46 span on assists from sophomore Bailey Edwards (Austin, TX/Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) and Viscomi, respectively, followed by an own goal in the 40th minute. To begin the second half, freshman Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) connected for the second time this season off a midfield restart, driving her shot into the lower right of the net. Nearly three minutes after the McManus goal, Viscomi knocked home her team-leading 10th goal of the fall on a pass from Konopka. The hosts finished the scoring when freshman Abby Isaac (Larchmont, NY/Proctor Academy), who played 20:30 in net to begin the stanza, moved onto the field and tallied her first collegiate goal. Furlong assisted on the play. Isaac and junior goalkeeper Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) combined on Wheaton's 12th shutout of the season to record the win, while Mount Holyoke junior Arden Hemstreet (San Anselmo, CA/Sir Francis Drake) and sophomore Elizabeth Guenther (Pelham, NY/Rye Country Day) totaled five stops. The visitors also had a pair of their defenders clear two Lyon shots off the line. Wheaton, which will next host the opening round of the NEWMAC Tournament beginning this Saturday at 1:00 p.m., plays an opponent that is to be determined based on tonight's remaining games.
