Konopka earns D3Kicks.com and NEWMAC weekly honors

October 23, 2006

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's soccer standout Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) earned both national and conference accolades for the week ending on Sunday, October 22. Konopka was named to the 11-member D3Kicks.com Team of the Week after being named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Co-Player of the Week.

Konopka earned the fourth weekly conference accolade of her career, sharing the award with Springfield College sophomore Lauren Peltier. The junior forward tallied at least one point in each game during nationally-ranked Wheaton's 3-0 week to become the sixth player in program history with 100 career points. In a 1-0 win over Babson College on Tuesday, Konopka assisted the game's lone tally in the 15th minute before notching another helper during a 2-0 victory over Gordon College on Thursday.

Against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Saturday, Konopka tallied in the 48th minute to hit 100 points exactly. The Lyons' 5-1 win helped secure their eighth consecutive NEWMAC regular season title while extending their conference unbeaten streak to 72 games, which matched the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point women (1997-2003) for the second longest such run in NCAA soccer history, regardless of division or gender.

For the season, Konopka leads the Lyons with 25 points and is second in each goals (8) and assists (9). Last week she not only moved within seven points and five goals of fifth in each career category at Wheaton, but she is now tied for eighth in assists (26). Konopka currently has 100 points and 37 goals.

A catalyst for the league's top offense (3.11 goals per game), Konopka leads 17-1 Wheaton into action in its regular season finale on Tuesday against Mount Holyoke College at 3:30 p.m. The Lyons, who are ranked 10th nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), also host a NEWMAC Tournament first round game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
