Wheaton ups win streak to four on Viscomi's team-leading sixth goalSeptember 20, 2006 WILLIMANTIC, CT- Sophomore Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) recorded her team-leading sixth goal of the season and second game-winner this fall to lead Wheaton College past host Eastern Connecticut State University, 2-1 in non-conference women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Nevers Field. The Lyons avenged last year's 1-0 loss to the Warriors, one that snapped Wheaton's 49-game regular season home winning streak. Upping this year's winning streak to four games, the Blue and White improved to 7-1 overall after entering this afternoon's contest ranked 15th in the country and second in New England according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Eastern is now 4-4 on the season. The hosts took an early one-goal lead in the 19th minute when the Lyons were unable to clear it from their own end. A miskick deflected off senior Eliana Handschu (Madera, CA/Madera) and to the feet of sophomore Meghan Ryczek (East Haddam, CT/Nathan Hale-Ray), who knocked her shot into an open net. Wheaton knotted the score with 7:20 to go in the opening half, as junior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) took advantage of a breakaway that was set up by freshman Kerry Kiley (Dedham, MA/Brimmer and May School). Late in the second half, first-year athlete Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) began the winning play when she controlled the ball on the right side and sent it to junior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth), who in turn left it for Viscomi. Viscomi launched a line drive inside the left post to complete the scoring. Freshman goalkeeper Abby Isaac (Larchmont, NY/Proctor Academy) picked up two saves to collect her first collegiate win, as she relieved junior Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) at the half. Cockburn also had two stops. For Eastern, sophomore Megan Gloster (Agawam, MA/Agawam) and freshman Kim Church (Farmington, CT/Farmington) combined for six saves. Wheaton held a 20-10 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. On Saturday, the Lyons return to Mirrione Stadium, where they will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play against Smith College at 1:00 p.m. Wheaton looks to extend its conference unbeaten streak to 65 games, the third-longest stretch in NCAA history.
