Viscomi propels Lyons over Tufts in clash of national powersSeptember 12, 2006 NORTON, MA- Sophomore Angelamaria Viscomi's (Newton, MA/Newton North) 76th-minute tally lifted the 23rd-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over number six Tufts University on Tuesday at Mirrione Stadium, avenging its loss in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. The 4-1 Lyons, who are tied for third in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) regional poll, were eliminated in the Sweet 16 last season by the Jumbos. Tufts, which is the top team in this week's NSCAA New England rankings and tied for sixth nationally, fell to 0-1-1. The Jumbos were the fourth of five straight Wheaton opponents to qualify for last year's NCAA Tournament. Viscomi's team-leading fifth tally, the third game-winner of her career, came at 75:14 after junior back Erin Davis (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) lofted a pass into the right side of the box. Viscomi caught up and sent a hard shot just over senior keeper Annie Ross (Newton, MA) into the center of the cage. The goal came after a number of missed opportunities for each team. In the 19th minute, Tufts junior Martha Furtek's (East Falmouth, MA) corner kick sailed to the far post and was curling into the net, but Wheaton senior Courtney Hale (Andover, MA/Andover) stood at the goal line and booted the ball out of harm's way. The Lyons had a golden chance in the 37th minute, as sophomore Jessie Landau's (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) doorstep shot went wide of Ross before freshman Whitney Hardy (Truckee, CA) blocked the net to save a goal. Wheaton had a marker disallowed in the 49th minute due to an offside call, and junior Lauren Fedore (East Lansing, MI) nearly tallied twice for the Jumbos. She hit the right side of the net in the 62nd minute and headed a ball barely over the crossbar three minutes later. Junior keeper Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) improved to 2-0 as a Lyon, stopping one shot for her second collegiate shutout and first while wearing blue and white. Ross also made one stop, while Wheaton held a 14-11 advantage in shots. The Lyons complete a three-game homestand on Thursday when they take on Worcester State College, a team Wheaton knocked out of last year's NCAA Tournament. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. SCORING: 1st 2nd Final 2nd Half: WC- Angelamaria Viscomi (Erin Davis) 75:14 Goalie Saves: WC- Elana Cockburn 1; TU- Annie Ross 1 Shots: WC- 14; TU- 11 This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
