Viscomi's career day leads to NEWMAC Co-Player-of-the-Week nod

September 4, 2006

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's soccer standout Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) picked up the first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player-of-the-Week honor of her young career. Recognized for the week ending on Sunday, September 3, Viscomi shares the award with Babson freshman Kayla Pomponi.

Viscomi, who led the team in assists as a freshman, has already exceeded her 2005 goal total with four goals, as well as an assist. During Friday's 7-2 victory over Simmons College, Viscomi notched a goal early in the second half before putting together a three-goal, seven-point performance in Sunday's 7-0 shutout versus Johnson & Wales University. She assisted on the game-winner 8:50 into the game, netted her first tally 59 seconds later and tacked on two more 5:48 apart during the second half.

Leading the team in scoring with four goals and nine points, Viscomi also paces the NEWMAC in each category. She ranks second in points per game, tied for second in goals per match and tied for eighth in assists. Viscomi registered three goals, 12 assists and two game-winners in 25 games as a freshman.

Joining Springfield College with a league-best 2-0 record on the young season, Wheaton's two-game scoring total leads all conference members, while its 7.00 average is tied for second. The Lyons' goal total through two games is the program's highest offensive output to start a season since racking up 16 goals in 2001.

Viscomi and Wheaton take to the road for the first time Wednesday, when the team travels to Endicott College for a non-conference game under the lights at 7:30 p.m.
