Trio of Wheaton women's soccer alums draw honors, compete for titlesAugust 18, 2006 NORTON, MA- Former Wheaton College women's soccer players Beth Caromile (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim), Erin Duffy (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) and Tracy Prihoda (Needham, MA/Needham) each received Eastern Massachusetts Women's Soccer League (EMWSL) all-star honors this summer and played for squads which reached the championship game of their respective divisions. Caromile and Duffy led the Franklin United to the championship of the 12-team Division 1B behind a 2-0 title game victory on August 7. The win capped a 12-2-1 season that saw Franklin win the Division 1B South crown and outscore opponents, 49-14. Prihoda's team, Azzurri, placed first in the Division 1A South standings before dropping a 2-1 decision in the 10-team league's championship game. Azzurri went 11-4 and held a 39-19 scoring edge. Prihoda, a 2004 Wheaton graduate, remains the program's career scoring leader with 256 points, exactly 100 more than the second-place scorer. Her 102 goals and 52 assists are also records, and she holds the Blue and White's single-season assist mark (23) and recorded the top three single-season goal and point totals. Prihoda, a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America selection, returns to Wheaton this fall for her first season as an assistant coach at her alma mater. Caromile, a member of the Class of 2005, had her best year as a senior, when she was selected as a first team All-American by the NSCAA, first team All-New England by both the NSCAA and New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA), and player of the year by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). She's still sixth in each career points (78) and assists (30) at Wheaton, eighth in goals (24), and among the top 10 for each single-season points and goals. Duffy, who also graduated in 2005 and spent last fall on the Wheaton sidelines as an assistant coach, was a four-time All-New England selection by the NSCAA and NEWISA and three-time NSCAA All-America first team choice. An integral member of a Wheaton backfield that posted a 0.37 goals against average and 70 shutouts during her four years, Duffy is third in program history in games played (93). The EMWSL has existed for more than 20 years and includes more than 60 teams and 1,200 women. The league currently has four divisions representing different playing levels ranging from recreational to highly competitive. Wheaton's trio competed in the highest division, comprised mostly of former NCAA Division I, II and III college players. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 1/31/07. |
