2002 NEWMAC WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT - Lyons take third consecutive conference title with 5-0 shutout of MIT

November 10, 2002

NORTON, MA- For the third straight season, the Wheaton College women's soccer team collected the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament title, this time with a 5-0 shutout of MIT at Elms Field Sunday afternoon.

Winners of 28 straight conference games (including tournament play) and 17 consecutive contests this season, the Lyons improve to 20-1 overall and will advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament next week. The Engineers fall to 12-6-2 overall and will await a possible invitation to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament.

Wheaton opened the scoring at the 13:29 minute mark, as junior Tracy Prihoda (Needham, MA/Needham) crossed a pass to the left side of the field and found sophomore Erin Brennan (Mesa, AZ/Xavier College Prep). Brennan headed the ball past MIT goalkeeper Connie Yang (Chesterfield, MO/Parkway Central) for the 1-0 lead.

The Engineers then found themselves with a couple of opportunities to tie the game. In the 17th minute, junior Candace Wilson (Decatur, GA/Chamblee) lofted a crossing attempt over the goal box, but the pass was punched away by Wheaton keeper Jessica Broomhead (Barrington, RI/Barrington). Seven minutes later, MIT freshman Courtney Rothrock (Ukiah, CA/Ukiah) had an open look at the net, but her shot sailed above the crossbar and the score remained unchanged.

Taking advantage of the Engineer miscues, the Blue and White took a 2-0 lead in the 28th minute when Prihoda delivered a pass to a wide open Brennan in the center of the field. Brennan collected her second goal of the game, sending her shot into the bottom right corner of the net. Ten minutes later, first-year Kate Miller (Williamstown, MA/Mount Greylock) received a pass on the right side of the goal box from classmate Katie Hall (Longmont, CO/Niwot). With her back to the net, Miller turned and drilled her shot over the outstretched hands of Yang and into the back of the net for a 3-0 Wheaton lead.

In the 73rd minute, junior Christy McHugh (Salem, MA/Bishop Fenwick) scored the first of her two goals, the former coming from Prihoda, who added her third helper of the game. McHugh's second tally came at 79:11 on a cross from classmate Sheila Lacambra (Walnut Creek, CA/Northgate). Broomhead and first-year Emily Lipsky (Whitestone, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) shared time in net for Wheaton, stopping three and one shots, respectively. Yang recorded nine saves for MIT. Wheaton outshot the Engineers, 19-7 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
