Lyons run win streak to 15 over Bridgewater State following 2-1 victory

September 3, 2008

BRIDGEWATER, MA- The Wheaton College men's soccer team knocked off host Bridgewater State College for the 15th straight time since 1992 on Wednesday afternoon, as the Lyons posted a 2-1 victory in a battle of regionally-ranked squads at Swenson Field.

Ranked sixth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton remained unbeaten at 2-0-1, while the ninth-ranked Bears suffered their first setback in three games to fall to 2-1. Today was a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament first-round game played in Norton, which resulted in a 2-0 Lyon win.

Sophomore Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional), who recorded his first multi-goal contest, turned in his initial game-winning strike in a Wheaton uniform. Just 2:39 after Bridgewater State tied the match, Solomon converted a long throw-in from sophomore Jake Wagner (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) at 83:09.

Three sophomores combined on the Lyons' opening score, with Solomon picking up his first goal of the season. At the 12:35 mark, Solomon tallied the game's lone first-half marker with assists going to David Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway) and co-captain Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School).

Bridgewater State had a chance to knot the game with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, only to see its shot carom off the crossbar. Wheaton's defense held firm throughout, not allowing a goal until the 81st minute, as the Bears cracked the scoreboard on a corner kick when sophomore Donald Flores (Cranston, RI/Cranston East) assisted junior Matt Daniels (South Easton, MA/Oliver Ames).

Lyon sophomore goalie Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) finished with three stops, while Bear senior keeper Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA/East Longmeadow) had five saves. Wheaton held a slim 13-10 edge in shots while taking three of the seven corners.

The Lyons turn their attention to The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) foe Roger Williams University on Saturday for a road game in Bristol, Rhode Island, at 4:00 p.m.
