Wheaton plays to a draw with SUNY New Paltz during kick-off classic

August 30, 2008

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's soccer team completed play at its own Adidas Kick-Off Classic with a 2-2 double-overtime tie against the State University of New York at New Paltz on Saturday at Keefe Field. The Lyons and Hawks both moved to 1-0-1 after each of their prior two meetings, in 2005 and 2006, were decided by one goal.

After Wheaton had a pair of close-range opportunities go for naught during the first 25 minutes, sophomore keeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) made a brilliant kick save in the 31st minute to preserve the stalemate, and the Lyons soon came back down the field and scored. Sophomore Jake Wagner (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) sent a long throw to the far post toward junior Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott), who headed in his first goal of the year at the 31:39 mark.

Less than 10 minutes later, New Paltz senior Robert Mendes (Mineola, NY/Brentwood) served a ball from the left side of the box to the right, and junior Anton Shipman (Howard Beach, NY/Archbishop Molloy) chipped a shot over Davidson to knot the game at 40:54.

Davidson made another critical point-blank stop in the 52nd minute, and Wheaton forged back ahead at 57:43 when sophomore Eric Driscoll (Lexington, MA/Lexington) buried a penalty kick. The Lyons had a chance to make it a two-goal game in the 73rd minute, but an initial Blue and White shot from inside the box was stopped by New Paltz senior keeper Patrick Carlucci (Goshen, NY/Goshen), and a follow-up shot sailed wide.

The Hawks again drew even at 77:35 when junior Harper Jaroff (Old Westbury, NY/Wheatley) sent a free kick past a diving Davidson, and the teams went to overtime after Lyon sophomore David Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway) rang a shot off the left post from 20 yards out during the 87th minute.

After holding a 17-8 advantage in shots during regulation, Wheaton succumbed to a 3-0 Hawk edge during extra time despite still generating opportunities. New Paltz's best chance during overtime came when Jaroff's shot from five yards out was blocked in the 99th minute.

Davidson finished with three saves for Wheaton, which tallied a 17-11 advantage in shots, while Carlucci had four stops for the Hawks, who recorded eight of the game's 11 corner kicks.

The Lyons return to action on Wednesday at Bridgewater State College at 4:00 p.m. The teams met in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, when Wheaton corralled a 2-0 victory.
