Wheaton opens fall with 3-0 win over Husson in Adidas Kick-Off Classic

August 29, 2008

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's soccer team began the 2008 season with a 3-0 triumph over visiting Husson College during Friday's opener of the four-team Adidas Kick-Off Classic at Keefe Field. The State University of New York at New Paltz and Western New England College square off in this afternoon's second contest.

In a game that marked Wheaton's 18th straight home-opening victory since 1991, the Lyons tallied three first-half goals during a 15:04 span and didn't look back. Sophomore co-captain Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) posted a pair of goals during the second straight season opener, while classmate Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) assisted both times.

The Blue and White's first tally came at 10:48, when Solomon carried the ball close to the right end line before dumping his pass into Moreira for the quick finish from point-blank range. Wheaton sophomore goalie Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) kept the Eagles off the board in the 18th minute thanks to a sliding save off senior Jeff Truchon's (Greene, ME/Leavitt Area) restart from 20 yards out.

Moreira and Solomon were back at it again with 22:46 remaining in the first half to make it a 2-0 contest before sophomore David Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway) drove his left-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the net just 3:38 later. Freshman Pablo Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/American School of El Salvador) picked up the assist for his first point as a collegian.

Davidson finished with one first-half save to earn the victory, while sophomore Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) turned aside one shot during the second frame. Husson sophomore Miguel Dominguez (Rome, GA/Rome) was credited with nine saves in the loss.

The Lyons held advantages of 25-7 in shots and 6-4 in corner kicks.

Wheaton is back in action tomorrow for day two of the tournament, as the Lyons take on New Paltz at 2:00 p.m. Husson plays Western New England at 4:00 p.m.
