Maine road trip ends with 2-1 loss to nationally-ranked Bowdoin

October 14, 2007

BRUNSWICK, ME- The regionally-ranked Wheaton College men's soccer team finished a two-game trip to Maine with a 2-1 loss against nationally-ranked Bowdoin College on Sunday at Pickard Field. The Lyons, who are seventh in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll, yielded more than one goal for the first time in five games and fell to 9-5-3. Wheaton beat Husson College on Saturday. The Polar Bears, ranked 23rd nationally and third regionally, are 7-3-1.

During an opening half in which Bowdoin outshot the Lyons, 7-6 but the visitors held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks, the teams fittingly scored once apiece and entering intermission tied. Senior Nick Figueiredo (Wilmington, MA/Saint John's Prep) found the lower left corner at 11:23 to put Bowdoin in front, but Wheaton freshman Jake Wagner's (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) long throw in the 35th minute found senior Reed Hollett (Bedford, Nova Scotia/Halifax Grammar School) at the far post, and Hollett headed home the tying tally at 34:06.

The Polar Bears scored the eventual game-winner in the 51st minute, as senior Wolf Grueber (Hamburg, Germany) converted passes from Figueiredo and junior Dominic Fitzpatrick (Framingham, MA/Framingham). Hollett nearly sent home the equalizer late in regulation, as he slid a shot past senior keeper Nathan Lovitz (Fairfield, ME/Lawrence) that was cleared off the line by sophomore back Will Grunewald (Pittsburgh, PA/Mount Lebanon).

Freshman Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) made five saves for the Lyons, who held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Lovitz made three saves for the Polar Bears, as each team finished with 11 shots.

Over the final two weeks of the regular season, Wheaton is slated to play only two games, beginning with its home finale next Saturday against Babson College at 1:00 p.m. It will be a critical contest in determining who wins the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title and draws the tournament's top seed. Wheaton occupies first place with 10 points, while Babson is tied with Springfield College with nine.
