Ferriero's game-tying tally lifts Lyons to 1-1 deadlock at Coast GuardOctober 6, 2007 NEW LONDON, CT- Wheaton College freshman David Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway) knotted Saturday's men's soccer contest with more than 30 minutes remaining in regulation, and the Lyons played the United States Coast Guard Academy to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The nationally-ranked Blue and White remains first in the league at 3-0-1 and is 8-3-3 overall. The Bears are now 6-3-1 and 1-1-1. The teams last met in a 2006 NEWMAC Tournament semifinal, which was a scoreless draw. Wheaton, which is currently tied for 25th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll and stands third in the region, then won a penalty-kick shootout with the Bears to advance to the title game. The Lyons now have an 11-game unbeaten streak in league play. Coast Guard, which entered today ranked in a tie for 10th in New England, broke on the board early, as junior Peter Deneen (Ojai, CA) tallied at 12:15 following a Wheaton turnover in its own half of the field. Senior Ben Weber (Eden Prairie, MN) assisted, as Deneen scored his fifth goal of the season after firing a shot from 20 yards out into the lower portion of the net. Ferriero's fourth marker of the year tied the contest at 58:02. From the left side of the field, freshman David Winrow (South Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) fired a free kick from 40 yards out toward the net, and Ferriero redirected the pass, heading in the equalizer from the center of the box. During the combined 20 minutes of overtime, the teams totaled only five shots. For the game, Wheaton outshot the hosts, 16-14, while the Bears held a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks. Wheaton freshman Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) turned aside five shots, including one in overtime, while first-year Bear keeper Chris Tarbell (Haddonfield, NJ) made seven saves.
