Cote's late marker caps Wheaton's 3-2 comeback win at SpringfieldSeptember 29, 2007 SPRINGFIELD, MA- Senior Trevor Cote's (Portsmouth, RI/Providence Country Day School) 81st-minute strike pushed Wheaton College past Springfield College, 3-2 on Saturday after the Lyons had faced a two-goal first-half deficit during New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Brock-Affleck Field. Freshman Kyle Sye (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) tied a school record by assisting all three markers. Wheaton, which is tied for fifth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) New England poll, pushed its winning streak to four. The Blue and White now stands 8-2-2 overall and is alone in first place in the NEWMAC at 3-0. The Pride fell to 4-6 and 1-2 on the season. The hosts jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 15:11 into the contest. Sophomore Adrian Schippers (Ashby, MA/Cushing Academy) tallied at the five-minute mark, beating two defenders and sending a shot off the right post and in, to snap Wheaton's shutout streak at exactly 285 minutes. Senior Tony Distasio (Burlington, CT/Lewis S. Mills) headed home junior Jeremy Scheer's (Enfield, CT/Enfield) direct kick 10 minutes later. Wheaton still trailed by two with 15 minutes remaining before halftime, but a pair of underclassmen drew the Lyons even less than 10 minutes later. Sye and freshman Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) set up first-year Yuri Moreira's (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) tally at 30:48, and Sye provided the helper on sophomore Tyler Ostholthoff's (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) tying marker at 38:18. After a first half in which the teams combined for 12 shots and two corner kicks, the second stanza saw 12 shots and four corners taken, but only Cote was able to find the back of the net, with 9:37 remaining. Sye hit a restart to Cote, who flicked a header in for his second game-winning goal in as many contests. The Lyons outshot Springfield, 14-10, and each team attempted three corners. Freshman Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) and Pride senior BJ Sturdivant (Bear, DE/Glasgow) each made six saves, as both had four second-half stops.
