Driscoll, Solomon lift Lyons over Engineers, 3-0 in NEWMAC playSeptember 22, 2007 NORTON, MA- Freshmen Eric Driscoll (Lexington, MA/Lexington) and Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) each had a goal and an assist as the regionally-ranked Wheaton College men's soccer team downed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 3-0 on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Keefe Field. The Lyons, who are sixth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll, improved to 6-2-2 overall and 2-0 in the league. Wheaton notched its second straight shutout in extending its home unbeaten streak against NEWMAC teams to 19 games. MIT, which is tied for 10th in the regional poll, is now 3-2-1 and 0-1-1. Wheaton controlled the first half on paper, holding a 10-2 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, and the Lyons nearly broke on the board in the fourth minute, but freshman David Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway) hit the crossbar. Late in the frame, Driscoll snapped the deadlock. With 10 seconds left, first-year Jake Wagner (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) sent a long throw-in toward the net, and the ball squirted free to the top of the box, where Driscoll connected and drove a hard shot home with two seconds left. It was his first collegiate marker. In the second half, MIT threatened during the 54th minute, but junior Andrew Bishara's (Toledo, OH/Maumee Valley Country Day School) corner kick was punched out of the box by freshman keeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School). Nearly two minutes later, Solomon sent home his sixth goal at 56:12 off a Driscoll feed. Just 28 seconds after that, Solomon hit a ball over the defense that sent Ferriero in alone on the keeper. Ferriero buried his third tally of the year into the right side. MIT had another opportunity to get on the board in the 71st minute, but Bishara's free kick just missed the frame by a foot to the right. The Blue and White finished with advantages of 19-6 in shots and 7-2 in corners, while Davidson made one save for his first collegiate win and shutout. Junior Tom Caldwell (East Berlin, PA/Bermudian Springs) stopped five shots for the Engineers.
