Goalkeeper Smart draws top defensive honors from ECACSeptember 12, 2007
Smart earned each of Wheaton's decisions in net last week in helping the Lyons go 2-0-1. He started all three games while posting a 0.73 goals against average and .857 save percentage for a team now tied for sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll. Smart's toughest test was against perennial regional power Keene State College, as he made eight saves while guiding the Lyons to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Saturday. Smart blanked Bridgewater State College during the first half of Wednesday's 7-2 win and finished out the week by recording three saves and backstopping Wheaton to a 2-1 win over Salve Regina University. The first-year keeper currently leads the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in save percentage (.850), goals against average (0.81) and saves (17). While yielding just three goals in 335 minutes, Smart has posted a 3-0-1 record. Smart leads Wheaton back into action tomorrow in another tough regional test, as the Lyons travel to Western New England College for a 4:00 p.m. match. The Bears are ranked eighth in New England.
