Ostholthoff's first career goal goes as game-winner in 2-1 victory over Salve ReginaSeptember 9, 2007 NORTON, MA- Sophomore Tyler Ostholthoff's (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) first career goal in the 68th minute of Sunday afternoon's men's soccer game helped lead Wheaton College to a 2-1 non-conference victory over visiting Salve Regina University at Clark Field. The Lyons, who are ranked seventh in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), extended their unbeaten streak to three games to move to 3-1-1 overall, while the Seahawks fall to 2-3. Despite Wheaton holding a 10-2 shot advantage in the opening half, both teams entered the break scoreless. Ostholthoff had a pair of opportune chances in the final five minutes of the first stanza, including having a goal called back with just under one minute to go. In the 41st minute, Ostholthoff's left footer from point-blank range sailed wide of the target, while freshman Yuri Moreira's (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) diving header at the buzzer went just right of the goal. The teams didn't waste any time cracking the scoring column in the second half, with the Seahawks getting on the board first at 46:59. Off a restart, Wheaton freshman goalie Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) made a diving save off a shot from senior Alex Clark (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield), but classmate Brian Banti (North Branford, CT/Notre Dame) one-timed the rebound into the top right corner of the net for the 1-0 edge. The hosts knotted the game just 3:10 after that, as Moreira dumped his pass back out to freshman Kyle Sye (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) on the right side of the field. Sye quickly crossed the ball toward the center of the net, finding freshman Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) for the finish. At 67:53, Ostholthoff was on the receiving end of a pass from senior Dan Chong (Miami, FL/Coral Reef) for the winner. The Lyons had 15 shots in the second half alone to finish with 25 total, while the Seahawks were credited with six shots. Wheaton also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Smart stopped three Salve shots to earn the win, while junior Cabot Barnett (Sunapee, NH/Tilton School) made seven saves for the Seahawks. The Lyons head to western Massachusetts on Thursday to face nationally-ranked Western New England College in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament game. Action in Springfield is set for 4:00 p.m. Western New England is ranked in a tie for 19th in the country and is third in the region.
