Lyons tally seven straight during 7-2 triumph over Bridgewater State

September 5, 2007

NORTON, MA- Senior Dan Chong (Miami, FL/Coral Reef) had a hand in the Wheaton College men's soccer team's first three goals, leading the Lyons to a 7-2 non-conference triumph over local foe Bridgewater State College Wednesday afternoon at Keefe Field. Wheaton, which entered the game ranked seventh in the region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), raised its mark to 2-1, while the Bears fell to 1-2.

Scoring seven goals for the first time since September 28, 2004, Wheaton broke the stalemate a little over eight minutes in, when freshman Eric Driscoll (Lexington, MA/Lexington) flicked a serve from classmate David Winrow (South Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) to Chong, who drove his shot into the middle netting.

Chong fed sophomore Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) on a successful breakaway opportunity in the 14th minute before delivering a well-placed corner kick to the head of senior Reed Hollett (Bedford, Nova Scotia/Halifax Grammar School) in the 27th minute. Winrow finished off the first-half scoring with a blistering shot at 42:04, which went for his first collegiate tally.

The Lyons continued their offensive prowess in the second half, scoring three times during a 4:14 span, including the final two in 16 seconds. First-year Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) found the back of the net at 46:38, classmate Jake Wagner (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) scored on a restart from Driscoll at 50:36, and freshman Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) converted a Solomon pass at 50:52. The Solomon and Wagner goals were the first of their careers.

Bridgewater State scored their two goals in the 65th and 83rd minutes, as juniors Jon Machado (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) and Jon Nutting (Rockland, MA/Rockland) were credited with the tallies. Seniors Jay O'Neil (Medfield, MA/Medfield) and Takashi Suzuki (Tochigi, Japan/Kanuma-Higashi) picked up the assists on the plays.

Freshman goalkeeper Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) earned his second win of the season after notching a save in the opening half, while classmate Stefan Viragh (Columbus, OH/Wellington School) stopped three shots in his collegiate debut during the second frame. The Bears used three goalies in the loss, led by senior starter Drew Pontbriand (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven), who made four saves in the opening half.

On Saturday, Wheaton remains in Norton for the second contest of its three-game homestand against regional foe Keene State College at 1:00 p.m.
