Wheaton men complete Virginia trip with 4-1 setback to Virginia Wesleyan

ASHLAND, VA- The Wheaton College men's soccer team jumped on top against Virginia Wesleyan College but couldn't hang on during day two of the Randolph-Macon Kick-Off Tournament, falling 4-1 in a Sunday match between a pair of 2006 NCAA Tournament teams. The Lyons slip to 1-1 in the young season, while the Marlins move to 2-0.

Wheaton senior Reed Hollett (Bedford, Nova Scotia/Halifax Grammar School) headed home a corner kick offering from classmate Dan Chong (Miami, FL/Coral Reef) at 32:18 for the game's first score, but the lead proved to be short-lived, as freshman Harrison Myrdal (Virginia Beach, VA/Floyd E. Kellam) used a header to knot the score just 1:05 later. Not even three more minutes passed when Marlin sophomore Kelvin Sealy (Virginia Beach, VA/Frank W. Cox) recorded the unassisted game-winner in the 36th minute.

The second half went in favor of Virginia Wesleyan, as the Marlins held a 9-1 advantage in shots and 3-0 edge in corners. The Marlins added a pair of goals in the 52nd and 72nd minutes. Wheaton freshman goalkeeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) was credited with five saves in his collegiate debut, while Virginia Wesleyan senior Kyle Williams (Springfield, VA/Robert E. Lee) earned the win and had three stops in just over 75 minutes.

At the conclusion of the game, freshmen Eric Driscoll (Lexington, MA/Lexington), Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) and Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) were named to the all-tournament team.

The Lyons begin their New England schedule on Wednesday as they welcome local foe Bridgewater State College to Keefe Field for their home opener at 4:00 p.m. Wheaton has won all 12 meetings in a series that dates back to 1992.
