Moreira tallies twice to send Wheaton past Randolph-Macon, 2-1 in opener

September 1, 2007

ASHLAND, VA- Freshman Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) scored twice in a 2:37 span of the second half to lift the Wheaton College men's soccer team over Randolph-Macon College, 2-1 on Saturday in the opening game of the Randolph-Macon Kick-Off Tournament. The contest was each team's first of 2007.

Wheaton controlled the opening half on paper, holding a 4-2 edge in shots and 6-0 advantage in corner kicks, but neither team broke through until Moreira tapped home his first collegiate marker with 21:59 remaining in regulation. Freshmen Eric Driscoll (Lexington, MA/Lexington) and Jake Wagner (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) assisted. With 19:22 left, Moreira deflected in a Driscoll shot to quickly give the Lyons a two-goal cushion. The hosts cut into their deficit during the 77th minute when freshman David Krukiel (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) tallied, but the Yellow Jackets came no closer.

For the game, Wheaton outshot the hosts by an 11-8 margin and collected nine of the game's 10 corner kicks. Freshman Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield), one of eight first-year collegians in the Lyons' starting lineup, made five saves in goal. Freshman Jason DePre (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow) turned aside six shots for the hosts.

Wheaton completes its Virginia trip tomorrow during the second day of the tournament by facing Virginia Wesleyan College, which advanced to last season's NCAA Tournament, at 2:30 p.m.
