Cushing becomes fifth coach in Wheaton history to join 200-win clubNovember 5, 2006 NORTON, MA- Wheaton College head men's soccer coach Matt Cushing became the fifth coach in school history to join the 200-win club when his Lyons downed Babson College during the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament championship game at Keefe Field on Sunday. A native of nearby Duxbury, Cushing is the fourth active Wheaton coach to reach 200 wins, as Gina Loudenburg (softball), Lynn Miller (women's tennis) and Eric Podbelski (baseball) have all done so. Loudenburg's women's volleyball teams also surpassed 200 victories during her 11-year tenure from 1990-2000 on the sidelines, while Del Malloy coached the women's basketball team to more than 200 wins during 13 seasons from 1984-1997. In 1994, Cushing's Wheaton career began when he inherited a program that was entering its sixth year of existence with a 47-37-7 (.555) all-time record, had recorded three winning seasons and earned a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament bids. Since then, Cushing's charges have posted a 200-51-22 (.773) mark under his guise, putting together a winning record during each of his 13 seasons, and participated in six NCAA Tournaments, advancing to the Final Four in 2003 and the Elite Eight in 2001. The Lyons qualified for their seventh NCAA Tournament berth with today's win. The Blue and White has also secured five additional ECAC Tournament berths during Cushing's tenure, winning the 1998 tournament, while capturing six NEWMAC regular season titles and six postseason championships since the conference incorporated men's soccer for the 1998 season. Wheaton won the regular season crown this year for the third consecutive season and has posted a 58-11-3 all-time mark against NEWMAC foes, including a 44-8-2 record in regular season play. Cushing entered the season with the 17th-highest winning percentage in NCAA men's soccer history, including the sixth-best among Division III coaches. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) named him the region's top coach in 2001, and he drew coach-of-the-year honors from the Eastern Massachusetts Soccer Coaches Association in 2000, the NEWMAC in 1998 and 2001, and the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) in 1997 and 2001.
