Wheaton 4x400 relay tops nine-team heat at prestigious Penn Relays

April 26, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, PA- The Wheaton College women's outdoor track and field team's 4x400-meter relay quartet won its heat on Thursday at the 113th running of the prestigious Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field.

Sophomores Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy), Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and freshman Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) completed the event in 3:54.04, which was nearly a full two seconds faster than a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championship. The foursome ended up topping the nine competing teams, including five from Division I and two from Division II, after the squad with the fastest time was disqualified.

Also on Thursday, two-time reigning indoor national champion Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater), a senior All-American, participated in a high jump competition for athletes from Eastern colleges. Harlow's height of 5' 4 1/2" was tied for fourth, as she finished eighth overall among 15 jumpers. Out of the 27 athletes who jumped during a pair of competitions, Harlow's showing was tied for eighth.

Both the Wheaton men's and women's team take part in Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship at the United States Coast Guard Academy. The Lyon women have won nine consecutive league championship meets.
