Lyons open outdoor seasons at Carolina Classic in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, PR- Senior All-American Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the high jump during her first try since winning the indoor national crown in the event as the Wheaton College men's and women's track and field teams opened their outdoor seasons on Saturday at the Carolina Classic.

Harlow's high jump height of 5' 5 3/4" came one week after notching her second consecutive indoor national title. She finished second in the event on Saturday and came in fourth during the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.40. A pair of field counterparts picked up top-four finishes, as senior Katelyn Teixeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) was third in the javelin, while junior Cassandra Migani (Brooklyn, CT/Norwich Free Academy) finished fourth in the shot put.

Freshman Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) turned in a fourth-place showing during the 400-meter dash in 57.80, while sophomore Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) matched Thompson's finish in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) came in fifth during each the 200- and 400-meter dash events in times of 25.50 and 57.84, respectively.

On the men's side, freshman Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) recorded Wheaton's best showing with a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.42. During the 400-meter hurdles, he was eighth in 56.14. Sophomore Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) was eighth in the 200-meter dash at 22.25 and ninth during the 400-meter dash in 49.79, while classmate Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) was ninth during the 100-meter dash in 11.23.

Both Wheaton teams break next weekend before returning to action on Saturday, March 31 at the Hillside Relays at Tufts University.
