Powell earns first career weekly nod, ties for ECAC's top track honor

April 3, 2008

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's outdoor track and field standout Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Track Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, March 30. The sophomore earned his first career weekly honor for either his indoor or outdoor achievements.

In sharing the honor with Bethany College sophomore Matt Cruse, Powell played a hand in two event wins during Tufts University's Snowflake Classic on Saturday. Powell won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.12, beating out the runner up by 0.19 seconds, before running leadoff for the victorious 4x100M relay quartet. The foursome finished in 43.91, besting a pair of Division I teams.

Powell, who earned his first All-America qualification during the indoor NCAA Championship and was named 2007 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Division III New England Men's Track Athlete of the Year last outdoor season, holds school records in the indoor 55-meter hurdles and the outdoor 110M hurdles.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday at the Skyhawk Invitational, which takes place in neighboring Easton at Stonehill College. Action begins at 11:00 a.m.
