Powell advances to 110 hurdles finals in first career NCAA meet eventMay 25, 2007 OSHKOSH, WI- Wheaton College freshman Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) qualified for the 110-meter hurdles finals during his first career event at an NCAA Division III Track and Field Championship, as he competed on Friday during the second day of the three-day outdoor meet in the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh's Titan Stadium. During the 110-meter hurdles trials, Powell finished third in his five-athlete heat and seventh overall out of 17 competitors thanks to a time of 14.63, which was just 0.04 seconds shy of the school record he set on May 5. One of nine finalists, he will be the lone freshman and one of two New England representatives in the championship round. The lone male Lyon to be competing this weekend, Powell is participating in his initial NCAA meet. Senior Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) narrowly missed out on her sixth career All-America honor, as she was among 17 athletes to compete in the high jump on Friday. Harlow's height tied for the sixth best in the championship but left her 10th overall, two spots shy of the final All-America position. She completed her stellar career as a two-time indoor high jump national champion while twice tying for second at the NCAA outdoor meet. The championship concludes tomorrow, as Powell starts things off in the 110-meter hurdles finals at 1:45 p.m., when he chases his first All-America accolade. Sophomore Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy), a three-time indoor All-American, seeks her first outdoor All-America honor as one of nine competitors in the 200-meter dash finals at 3:45 p.m. Ezeigwe, sophomores Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and freshman Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) will take part in the final event of championship weekend, the 4x400-meter relay, at 4:55 p.m. The quartet is one of nine that qualified for the finals. Jules and Thompson each earned All-America honors this past indoor season, while they join Karpow in seeking their first outdoor accolades. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
