Powell breaks school record, pair of women win individual events as Wheaton track and field teams compete at Division III New EnglandsMay 5, 2007 SPRINGFIELD, MA- Freshman Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) set a school record in the 110-meter hurdles, and a pair of women won events as the Wheaton College outdoor track and field teams finished competition at the NCAA Division III New England Championship on Saturday at Springfield College's Blake Track. The Lyon women placed eighth among 28 scoring teams with 49.5 points, while the men tallied 16 points and tied for 14th out of 26 squads. Williams College took the top spot for each gender, as the women notched 166.5 points and the men 137.5. Powell's school record came in the 110-meter hurdles during a second-place finish, as his time of 14.59 eclipsed a year-old program standard by 0.17 seconds. Powell provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship thanks to his performance and fell shy of the first-place finisher by 0.05 ticks. Freshman Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) also turned in a runner-up showing during the 400M in 49.98, as he and Powell were the lone scoring Lyons. For Wheaton's women, senior All-American Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) and freshman Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) each won individual events. Harlow was victorious in the high jump with a height of 5' 6 1/2", which provisionally qualified her for NCAAs and bettered the runner up by 5 1/4". Thompson won the 400-meter dash in 58.49 by 0.45 ticks over the nearest finisher. Harlow scored for the Lyons in an additional two individual events. Her time of 15.03 during a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles left Harlow 0.03 seconds shy of an NCAA Championship time, and she placed sixth during the long jump. Harlow joined Thompson and sophomores Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) and Samira Sanders (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) as the 4x100-meter relay quartet came in third. Sophomore Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) came in third during the heptathlon, while classmate Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) was fifth in the 400-meter dash. During the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) tied for fifth before classmate Christine Moreau (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) placed seventh. Each Wheaton team returns to action on Friday at the All New England Championship at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 5/7/07. |
