Harlow plays hand in four event victories at UMass-Lowell, Powell leads men with 110 hurdles triumph at Davis InvitationalApril 14, 2007 LOWELL, MA- Senior All-American Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) won the 100-meter hurdles and high and long jumps while running a leg on the winning 4x100-meter relay, leading the Wheaton College women's outdoor track and field team at the Davis Invitational Saturday afternoon at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Freshman Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) paced the men with a top finish in the 110-meter hurdles event. Harlow's most impressive showing came in the high jump, where her leap of 5' 8" was tops in the country, set a meet record by two inches and exceeded an NCAA Division III national meet automatic qualifying standard. Harlow's top time of 15.05 in the 100M hurdles missed a provisional qualifying mark by 0.05 seconds, while Wheaton's 49.33 finish in the 4x100M was 0.53 seconds shy. Harlow also captured the long jump title with a distance of 17' 1 1/4". Joining Harlow on the 4x100M relay quartet were junior Joell Whitley (Magnolia, NJ/Triton Regional), sophomore Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) and freshman Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver). Ezeigwe and Thompson also ran legs on the Lyons' top 4x400M relay, siding with sophomores Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and Christine Moreau (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) for a time of 3:59.60, which was 3.60 seconds short of a provisional standard. Aside from the women's five event victories, senior Katelyn Gannon (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury), sophomore Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) and Wheaton's second 4x400M relay squad had the day's top performances. Gannon and Jamiel finished third in the 100M hurdles and pole vault events, respectively, as did sophomores Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) and Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and freshmen Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) and Kamia Smith (Cincinnati, OH/Cincinnati Country Day School) in the 4x400M event. Rounding out the Lyons' top-five placements were Smith finishing fourth in the 400-meter dash, freshman Courtney Opalenik (Greenfield, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) tying for fourth in the pole vault, Calderwood and sophomore Ashley Mills (Hingham, MA/Hingham) taking fifth in the 800M run and discus throw, respectively, and Moreau placing in a tie for fifth in the 100M hurdles. Powell captured the 110-meter hurdles crown for the second consecutive weekend, as his time of 15:20 set a meet record and was 0.03 seconds faster than the closest competitor. Powell also helped Wheaton's 4x400M foursome take fourth, joining junior Pat Benson (Foxboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) and sophomores Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) and Albi Skenderi (Glendale, NY/Grover Cleveland). Sophomore Kyle Greenidge (Dorchester, MA/Newton North) finished fifth in the triple jump, Skenderi took seventh in the 110M hurdles and Benson placed eighth in the 1,500M run. The Lyon squads are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Cambridge to take part in the Coed Invitational at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
