Lyons stay unbeaten against Roger Williams, Sussman posts game-winner

Men's Soccer • Monday, October 6th, 2008

BRISTOL, RI- The nationally-ranked Wheaton College men’s soccer team rebounded from Friday’s loss to post a 2-1 non-conference victory at Roger Williams University on Monday afternoon, as junior Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) recorded the game-winning goal with just 2:53 to play at Bayside Field.

Running its unbeaten mark against the Hawks to 13 games with a 10-0-3 mark, the Blue and White won in Bristol for the first time since 2001. Wheaton, which is ranked 15th nationally and second in the region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), raised its record to 7-2-2. After having only been scored on four times in its prior seven games, Roger Williams fell to 6-3-1.

Sussman’s winner was his first of the season, as Wheaton rallied from a 1-0 deficit to score two goals in the final 25:35. The decisive tally began on a long throw from sophomore Jake Wagner (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional), and the ball eventually found classmate David Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway), who sent a pass to Sussman.

After Roger Williams struck first at 50:24 on a goal from senior Dan Saccoccio (Holtsville, NY/Sachem), the Lyons responded just over 14 minutes later when Ferriero and sophomore Eric Driscoll (Lexington, MA/Lexington) combined on the equalizer. The Hawk keeper was unable to corral an initial shot, giving Wheaton another opportunity, as Ferriero fed Driscoll for the quick putback.

Sophomore goalie Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) turned aside three shots in earning his initial win of the fall, while Roger Williams sophomore Peter Plate (Commack, NY/Saint Anthony’s) finished with seven stops. The Lyons outshot the Hawks, 21-15, and the hosts took four of the game’s six corner kicks.

Wheaton returns to Keefe Field on Saturday for its final homestand of the regular season, as the Lyons begin a four-game slate in Norton against New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Babson College. Set to begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday’s contest will be a rematch of last year’s league tournament final, a 4-0 Wheaton victory.
