Weekly LyonField Hockey (2-2) Evens Season Record with 3-1 Decision over UMass-DartmouthThe Wheaton College field hockey team evened its season record to 2-2 Thursday afternoon on a rain-soaked Clark Field, as the Lyons posted a 3-1 decision over visiting University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in a non-conference game. Wheaton opened the game's scoring in the first half, when sophomore Shea Clarke (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) recorded her first goal of the season with 24:29 to play. Taking their 1-0 lead into the intermission, the Lyons held a 12-3 shot advantage in the opening stanza. Wheaton tacked on another goal in the second half, as freshman Lyndsie Ryalls (Branford, CT/Branford) lifted her shot out of the reach of the UMass-Dartmouth goalkeeper. The Corsairs cut into their deficit just over six minutes later, sneaking a shot past sophomore goalie Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) to pull within a single goal. With 13:32 remaining, freshman Lindsay Raymond (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) put the game out of reach with her team-leading third goal of the year. Boll earned her first win of the season in the cage and was credited with two saves. Wheaton outshot UMass-Dartmouth, 26-7 and held a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners. Men's Soccer (6-1-1) Registers 2-0 Home Mark, Ties 12th-Ranked Williams in OvertimeThe Wheaton College men's soccer team opened its 2004 home slate in strong fashion this week, as the Lyons blanked Worcester State College, 6-0 in Tuesday's non-conference game and then downed Springfield College, 4-1 in Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener. The Lyons capped their week at 12th-ranked Williams College Sunday afternoon in Williamstown, as Wheaton and the Ephs battled to a double-overtime scoreless tie. Against Worcester State, the Lyons exploded for five first-half goals en route to the six-goal triumph. After nearly 25 minutes of scoreless play in the opening half, the Lyons began firing on all cylinders offensively with four goals over a 12-minute span. Ten different Wheaton players contributed at least a point in the scoring parade, led by freshman Jim Ferreiro's (Medway, MA/Medway) first goal at 24:30. Senior Barry Finnerty (Milton, MA/Beaver Country Day) picked up the assist. Three newcomers later extended the host advantage to a 4-0 margin, as sophomore Jared Bane (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) and freshmen Reed Hollett (Bedford, Nova Scotia/Halifax Grammer) and Colin Igoe (Weston, MA/Weston) posted three consecutive goals to put the game out of reach. Junior Ryan Wilson (Bedford, MA/Bedford) completed the first-half scoring with 15 seconds to play. Assists in the half were credited to senior Matt Ristuccia (Newton, MA/Newton North), sophomore Chris Sentance (Concord, MA/Williston-Northampton) and first-year athletes Connor Erickson (Canton, MA/Canton) and Trevor Cote (Portsmouth, RI/Providence Country Day). In the second half, Wilson tacked on his second goal of the afternoon in the 74th minute, with Cote earning his second assist on the play. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT/Newtown) went virtually untested in the opening half, while classmate David Croft (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) and junior Craig Varrell (New Castle, NH/Portsmouth) shared time in the second stanza. Versus Springfield, Ristuccia tallied a pair of goals in the first seven minutes of play to put the game away early. Ristuccia wasted little time offensively, scoring just 56 second into the opening half to give the hosts a lead that was not relinquished. In the seventh minute, Ristuccia struck again, this time launching a shot from the right side of the box into the bottom left corner of the net. Ristuccia took the feed from senior Gabe Margolis (Brookline, MA/Beaver Country Day). Springfield cut its deficit in half in the 39th minute, placing a free kick towards the bottom left corner of the net and out of the reach of Pachniuk. In the second stanza, sophomore Ariel Tatum (Cayman Islands, BWI/Holderness Day) knocked in a perfectly-placed corner kick attempt from Finnerty with 38:30 remaining to extend Wheaton's advantage to 3-1. The Lyons added an insurance goal in the 77th minute, when Wilson headed in a rebound off of a shot from Hollett. Pachniuk finished with three saves in the win. Wheaton held a 21-8 advantage in shots, with the Pride holding a 7-4 margin in corner kick attempts. At Williams, two of New England's top collegiate teams battled through 110 minutes of scoreless play, settling for the double-overtime draw. Wheaton and Williams played nip-and-tuck soccer for the first 30 minutes of play. In the waning minutes of the opening half coupled with the majority of time in the second stanza, the Ephs orchestrated more scoring opportunities but were unable to break the stalemate. Williams' best offensive chance came with 4:42 remaining in the first overtime period, when a player was taken down in the box. On the ensuing penalty kick, an Eph player directed his shot towards the upper right corner of the net only to be denied by Pachniuk. Feeding off of Pachniuk's critical save, the Lyons found new life the rest of the extra session and into the second overtime period. Wheaton outplayed Williams down the stretch and had a pair of legitimate scoring opportunities in the second overtime, but the Eph goalie made a couple of clutch stops to help preserve the shutout.
Women's Soccer (7-0-0) Breaks Program Shutout Record and Remains UnbeatenThe Wheaton College women's soccer team, ranked second in the country and first in New England according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), broke a program record for consecutive shutouts in a season, as the Lyons notched their sixth and seventh shutouts with a 2-0 victory over regionally-ranked Tufts University on Wednesday and a 6-0 triumph at Framingham State College on Sunday afternoon. Wheaton's previous best was six straight shutouts in 2001 and 2003. Remaining perfect in seven games, the Blue and White have outscored their opponents, 24-0. At Framingham State, senior co-captain Erin Duffy (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) also made school history, tying three other Wheaton players at the top of the list for assists in a game with four. Duffy assisted on Wheaton's first three goals, including distributing a cross to freshman Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) in the 29th minute for a 1-0 Lyon advantage. The visitors tacked on another goal before the half, when first-year Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) added Wheaton's second score at the 42:10 minute mark. In the second stanza, the Lyons exploded for four goals, including three tallies in the first nine minutes of play to put the game out of reach. LeBel stretched Wheaton's lead to 3-0 in the 48th minute and not even a minute later freshman Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) made it a four-goal game on a pass from Rabesa. Rabesa and junior Kate Miller (Williamstown, MA/Mount Greylock) rounded out Wheaton's scoring, with Duffy and Brennan credited with the assists. Junior goalie Emily Lipsky (Whitestone, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) had one save in 90 minutes. Women's Tennis (4-2, 0-2) Drops Pair of Conference Matches to Babson and WellesleyThe Wheaton College women's tennis team dropped a pair of conference matches to open its NEWMAC season this week, as the Lyons fell to defending champion Babson College, 6-3 on Tuesday in Babson Park and to Wellesley College, 7-2 on Saturday at Wheaton's Beard Field House. Versus Wellesley, the visitors held a 2-1 edge at the conclusion of doubles play, as the Blue were victorious in the second and third positions. At first doubles, Kriwinsky and sophomore Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis Parker) posted an 8-3 victory. Kriwinsky provided the hosts' second point of the match at first singles, as she remained perfect on the season with a three-set victory. After succumbing 7-5 in the first set, Kriwinsky stormed back to win 6-2, 6-3. Women's Volleyball (4-2, 2-0) Opens NEWMAC with Wins over Babson and HolyokeThe Wheaton College women's volleyball team, ranked 13th in the region according to the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA), recorded consecutive victories to open its NEWMAC slate this week, including winning 3-2 (30-15, 13-30, 29-31, 30-19, 15-11) at Babson College on Tuesday and 3-0 (30-13, 30-28, 30-22) over Mount Holyoke College on Saturday at Wheaton's Emerson Gymnasium. At Babson, Wheaton won four of the last five points in the fifth game to claim the victory. The Lyons dominated game one, but the Beavers responded with victories in the second and third games. Wheaton regained its momentum in the fourth game, winning 30-19 to even the overall match at 2-2. The Lyons then snapped an 8-8 tie in the fifth and final game, as first-year Chelsea Fleher's (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) kill sparked a 3-0 run. Fleher and first-year Robin Child (Snowmass, CO/Basalt) had 15 and 11 kills, respectively, while junior Carilyn Tately (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and sophomore Jade Lee (Eagle, ID/Eagle) combined for 26 digs. Junior Elizabeth Reagh (Seattle, WA/Seattle Lutheran) and sophomore Alexis Liesman (Winchester, CA/West Valley) added 20 and 17 assists, respectively. On Saturday against Mount Holyoke, the Lyons took a 21-13 lead before scoring nine straight points to defeat the visitors in game one. Mount Holyoke made game two a much closer affair however, as the two teams battled nip-and-tuck all the way through before sophomore Katie Dooley (Carpinteria, CA/Cate School) nailed the game-winning kill for a narrow 30-28 decision. Game three had both teams tied at 19 points apiece before Wheaton finished the game and the match with an 11-3 run. Child paced the Lyon offense with nine kills, while Reagh topped the team in assists with 27. Fleher led Wheaton defensively with 12 digs. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
