Lyons win first Pilgrim League game with 9-7 victory over visiting Clark

April 11, 2008

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team picked up its first league victory of the season on Friday, as the Lyons downed visiting Clark University, 9-7 at Mirrione Stadium. This afternoon's game was moved forward a day due to tomorrow's forecast for inclement weather. With the win, Wheaton moves to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in league play, while the Cougars fall to 3-8 and 1-2.

After nearly 12 minutes of scoreless play, the hosts picked up a pair of man-up goals just seven seconds apart, with freshman Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) breaking the stalemate with 3:03 left in the opening quarter. At 2:56, sophomore Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) converted classmate Connor Compton's (Deering, NH/Saint Mark's School) feed, and the Lyons held a 2-0 lead at the end of one. Clark scored the second quarter's lone goal at the 4:16 mark, as sophomore Garrett McAdam (Portland, ME/Portland) found classmate Chris Adams (Bradford, NH/Kearsarge Regional).

Compared to the first half, the teams combined for a flurry of third-quarter scores, with the Blue and White holding a 5-4 edge in the period in taking a 7-5 lead into the fourth. The Cougars knotted the score at two 34 seconds into the third and at three 1:59 in before sophomore Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) gave Wheaton the lead for good on an assisted goal from junior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) at 11:50. Horan made it a 5-3 game 26 seconds later, and the teams exchanged goals during the remainder of the stanza.

Landers provided the Lyons with their first three-goal advantage 29 seconds into the fourth, as the Cougars only managed to get within two twice at 6:53 and 2:04. Horan and Landers each finished with a hat trick, with Horan assisting twice, while Schaffer added two tallies and an assist. Sophomore goalie Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) finished with 12 saves in the victory.

McAdam paced the Cougars with a pair of goals and one assist, senior Dan Stern (Westport, CT/Staples) tallied twice, and junior Shawn Roche (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) accounted for a goal and an assist. Junior Tyler Campbell (Portland, OR/Lincoln) turned aside 12 shots in net.
