Lyons struggle at nationally-ranked Keene State, succumb to Owls, 19-10

April 1, 2008

KEENE, NH- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team struggled at nationally-ranked Keene State College Tuesday afternoon, as the Lyons gave way to 12 consecutive goals en route to a 19-10 non-conference setback at Owl Field. Dropping its second straight contest, Wheaton falls to 2-5 overall, while Keene State, ranked 18th in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) poll, remains unbeaten at 4-0.

The Owls jumped out to a quick 2-0 edge 1:21 in, but the Lyons wasted no time evening the score, as sophomore Warren Garceau (Guilford, CT/Canterbury School) and freshman Mike Craig (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) tallied within 15 seconds of each other. At the 4:01 mark of the first quarter, freshman Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) gave Wheaton its only lead of the game on a pass from junior Marco Barbone (Newton, MA/Newton North).

Keene State tied things up at 2:58 before closing out the opening period with three more tallies and a 6-3 lead. The Owls then proceeded to blank the Lyons, 4-0 in the second while reeling off the first four scores of the third, finishing a 12-0 run that spanned 26:04 for a commanding 14-3 advantage. Wheaton didn't convert on the offensive end for over 30 minutes of game time, as Landers' second goal coming at 3:32 of the third quarter snapped the scoreless stretch. Trailing 15-4 entering the fourth, the Lyons outscored Keene State, 6-4 in the final frame.

Nine different Wheaton players found the back of the net, with Landers proving to be the only multi-goal scorer with two. Sophomore Connor Compton (Deering, NH/Saint Mark's School) and freshman Duncan Smith (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) each scored once and assisted a goal, while sophomore goalie Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) took the loss with eight first-half saves. Classmate Alex Lewis (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) was credited with six stops in the second stanza.

Senior Ryan Hazelton (Chester, NH/Pinkerton Academy) tallied five goals for Keene State, while junior Tony Santa Fe (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) accounted for eight points on six assists and two goals. Senior Matt Johnson (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) picked up seven saves in the win in 55:28.

On Saturday, Wheaton will be in search of its first Pilgrim League victory, as the Lyons welcome Lasell College to Mirrione Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. start.
