Handful of NCAA provisional qualifying marks lead Wheaton tracksters at USATF national and New England meetsFebruary 24, 2008 NORTON, MA- A handful of NCAA national meet provisional qualifying marks paved the way for the Wheaton College men's and women's indoor track and field teams at the United States Track and Field (USATF) National Championship in Boston's Reggie Lewis Center and USATF New England Championship at Harvard University on Sunday. Wheaton's women's distance medley relay team competed on the national stage during the non-scoring meet at the Reggie Lewis Center, as senior Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro), junior Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) and sophomores Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) and Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) combined for a provisional standard of 12:11.15. At Harvard's Gordon Indoor Track and Tennis Center, junior Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) and freshman Diana Kornberg (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) posted provisional marks in the 400-meter dash and shot put events, respectively. Ezeigwe was the runner up in 57.25, while Kornberg's heave of 42' 8 3/4" was a personal best and good for sixth. Junior Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) placed second in the 5,000-meter run, classmate Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) finished fourth in the 800M run, and freshman Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) was sixth and seventh in the 200- and 60-meter dashes, respectively. Freshman Marcus Kohlman (Milton, MA/Milton) highlighted the meet on the men's side, winning the high jump with a personal-best and NCAA Championship provisional qualifying height of 6' 8 1/4". His leap was 2 1/4" higher than the closest competitor and placed him in the top 10 among Division III athletes heading into the weekend. Sophomore Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) followed up a very impressive Saturday with yet another provisional time in the 55-meter hurdles. Finishing second in the 60M hurdles with a time of 8.27, which converts to 7.73 for 55 meters, Powell had shattered his own school 55M hurdles record during yesterday's Division III New England Championship in 7.62. Junior Albi Skenderi (Glendale, NY/Grover Cleveland) secured a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, while freshman Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison) was sixth in the 400-meter dash. Wheaton returns to Boston next weekend for the two-day All New England Championship hosted by Boston University. Friday's start time is slated for 10:00 a.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
