Kornberg provisionally qualifies for nationals as women take fifth at University of Rhode Island, men place eighthJanuary 19, 2008 KINGSTON, RI- In just her second collegiate track meet, freshman Diana Kornberg (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship in the shot put on Saturday, helping lead the Wheaton College women's indoor track and field team at the University of Rhode Island's Sorlien Invitational in Mackal Field House. The women placed fifth in a Division I-heavy meet won by the University of Connecticut. Wheaton tallied 41 points in the eight-team field. The men scored 25 points en route to an eighth-place finish, with UConn completing the sweep. Kornberg's throw of 42' 7" was good enough for fifth place overall. Sophomore Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) was victorious in the 500-meter run, as her time of 1:16.74 was just 0.38 seconds shy of a 10-year-old program record. Classmate Kelly Libert (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse) came in fourth in 1:21.05. Senior Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) recorded a fourth-place mark in the mile in 5:14.37, while junior Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) also came in fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.83. Freshman Lacresha Simpson (Bronx, NY/New Rochelle) had an all-around solid day in finishing sixth in the 55-meter hurdles and long jump and ninth in the triple jump. The squad's 4x800-meter relay, comprised of Brousseau, juniors Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) and Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and sophomore Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield), was the fifth team to cross the finish line. Freshman Erin Neville (North Providence, RI/La Salle Academy) was two inches away from provisionally qualifying for the national meet in the high jump. Her leap of 5' 3" was good for seventh. On the men's side, sophomore Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) came in third in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.80, falling just short of his school record by 0.02 seconds and a national meet provisional qualifying standard by 0.05 seconds. Freshman Marcus Kohlman (Milton, MA/Milton) took third in the high jump, missing a provisional height by 3/4", as he cleared the bar at 6' 6 1/4". Sophomore Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) turned in the men's highest placement with a runner-up finish in the 500-meter run. His time of 1:05.69 was 0.73 seconds shy of a 10-year-old school standard. Wheaton's 4x400-meter relay team placed fifth overall, as Powell joined junior Albi Skenderi (Glendale, NY/Grover Cleveland) and freshmen Nick Colantuono (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) and Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison). Sophomore Mark Cimino (Danbury, CT/Danbury) advanced to the 55-meter dash finals by tying for sixth in the trials in 6.59. Colantuono rounded out Wheaton's scorers by taking eighth in the 500-meter race. Wheaton turns back around on Friday for the Reebok Collegiate Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center.
