Wheaton tracksters open season with two top-10 finishes at Dartmouth Relays

January 13, 2008

HANOVER, NH- The Wheaton College men's and women's track and field teams opened the indoor season in strong fashion Sunday at Dartmouth College, as the Lyons posted a pair of top-10 finishes during the 39th annual Dartmouth Relays at Leverone Field House.

The women were the meet's top Division III squad, finishing sixth among 26 scoring teams with 28 points. The men took ninth out of 34 scoring squads and tallied 16.33 points. The Northeastern University women and Dartmouth men claimed their respective team titles.

Sophomore Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) paced the women, as she turned in a Division III national championship provisional qualifying time of 58.47 in the 400-meter dash, good for fourth overall. She also led off the second-place 4x400-meter relay team, joining junior Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and sophomores Kelly Libert (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse) and Kamia Smith (Cincinnati, OH/Cincinnati Country Day School).

Wheaton's 4x200-meter relay team also captured second place, with Smith serving as the anchor for both runner-up foursomes, as she sided with junior Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) and freshmen Danielle Hamlett (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School) and Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope). Classmate Lacresha Simpson (Bronx, NY/New Rochelle) was third in the long jump in her collegiate debut.

For the men, junior Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) exceeded a Division III national meet provisional qualifying standard in the 60-meter dash, placing second in the semifinals in 6.90. That time coverts to 6.42 for 55 meters, which eclipses Wright's school record by 0.01 seconds.

Sophomore Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) produced Wheaton's lone event win with the meet's top time of 8.34 in the 60-meter hurdles, as Powell's time was 0.30 seconds faster than the closest competitor.

Sophomore Mark Cimino (Danbury, CT/Danbury) took fourth in the 60M dash, freshman Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison) was fifth in the 400-meter race and classmate Marcus Kohlman (Milton, MA/Milton) tied for sixth in the high jump.

The teams return to action on Saturday for the Sorlien Invitational hosted by the University of Rhode Island beginning at 12:00 p.m.
