Wheaton track teams boast two event victories at ECAC Championship

March 3, 2007

MIDDLETOWN, CT- The Wheaton College men's and women's indoor track and field teams boasted a pair of event victories at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship at Wesleyan University's Bacon Field House Saturday, as the Lyons each finished in the top 15 in their final competition before next weekend's national championship.

The women placed in a four-way tie for 12th among 56 scoring teams with 23 points, while the men matched the University of Rochester's 18 points for a tie for 14th in the 55-team field. SUNY Brockport captured the men's title with 52 points, while the Saint Lawrence University women won with 48.

Senior All-American Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) continued her stellar indoor campaign by winning the high jump championship, as she followed last weekend's personal-best 5' 8 3/4" with an NCAA national meet automatic qualifying height of 5' 7 3/4", which was two inches higher than the next competitor. Harlow also advanced to the finals of the 55M hurdles, where she took seventh with a provisional qualifying time of 8.46.

Wheaton's other event win came on the men's side, as sophomore All-Americans Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington), Victor Martinez (Exeter, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) and Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) joined freshman Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) for a provisional qualifying standard in the 4x400-meter relay. The quartet turned in a time of 3:21.01, eclipsing the second-place finishers by 1.57 seconds.

Freshman Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) nearly won the Lyons their third event of the meet, as he secured a runner-up finish in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.80.

Sophomores Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) and Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) took fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Classmate Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) was seventh in the 500M event, while freshman Kamia Smith (Cincinnati, OH/Cincinnati Country Day School) placed seventh in the 400M.

The Lyons will await word on the official fields for next weekend's national championship at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, which are expected to be announced Monday afternoon. The two-day meet begins on Friday at 12:00 p.m.
