Five NCAA Championship standards met by Wheaton at Valentine Invite

February 10, 2007

BOSTON, MA- Sophomore All-American Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 400-meter dash, and All-American classmate Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) turned in the top 400M time in the nation to highlight the Wheaton College men's and women's indoor track and field teams' competition at the Valentine Invitational in Boston University's Track and Tennis Center over the weekend.

Ezeigwe's time of 56.34 in the 400-meter dash placed her ninth among the event's 129 runners, and was tops in New England and second in the nation this season. Freshman Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) turned in a time of 57.66, which was a provisional qualifier for the NCAAs and third in the region.

During the 200-meter dash, Ezeigwe ran the fastest time in New England at 25.02. The result put her 13th out of 153 competitors and was the best showing among the event's Division III runners. Senior All-American Jennifer Harlow's (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) time of 26.25 stands fourth in the region. In the 800-meter run, sophomore Lily Calderwood's (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) finish of 2:17.37 was New England's fourth fastest, as each of the top four times in the region this season were turned in during that event.

Harlow met a provisional standard in the high jump with a height of 5' 6", which matched six others for the third-best jump of the meet and left her tied for sixth overall. During the 55-meter hurdles, Harlow's time of 8.64 allowed her to come within 0.04 seconds of qualifying for the finals heat and was the third-fastest time among Division III competitors in the event.

In men's action, Cunha and freshman Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) each met provisional qualifications for the NCAA Championship during the 400-meter dash. Cunha was eighth in 48.22, which was the best among Division III runners this season. Ibric's time of 48.54 was the second fastest in the region this season.

Sophomore All-American Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) was seventh in the 200-meter dash at 21.92, missing his own school record by merely 0.06 seconds. He was the top Division III finisher in the event. Classmate Kyle Greenidge's (Dorchester, MA/Newton North) triple jump distance of 44' 5.25" was the top showing among the event's Division III athletes.

Wheaton's teams will compete next Sunday in the USATF New England Championship at Harvard University beginning at 10:00 a.m.
