Wheaton's Ezeigwe picks up ECAC weekly track accolade

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's indoor track and field standout Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) drew Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Track Co-Athlete-of-the-Week honors for the week ending on Sunday, January 21. It marked the third straight week in which a male or female Lyon earned an ECAC accolade. Ezeigwe shared the award with Oneonta State College senior Maureen Verdier.
Ezeigwe, a sophomore All-American, won the 400-meter dash while also provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championship on Saturday at the University of Rhode Island's Sorlien Invitational. Ezeigwe's time of 57.73 - the third best in the nation this season - was 1.99 seconds faster than the runner-up finisher and paced a 13-athlete field otherwise comprised of Division I and II runners. The second-, third- and fourth-place competitors were each Division I athletes.
Ezeigwe also helped the 4x400-meter relay team to a third-place showing, one week after leading the quartet to a time of 3:58.55, which remains the fastest in the nation this season. The time provisionally qualified the foursome for nationals.
On Saturday, the Lyons finished third out of 10 teams at URI despite entering athletes in only 12 of 17 scoring events. The remaining nine schools hailed from Divisions I and II.
Wheaton's men and women continue their indoor seasons on Saturday at the Wesleyan University Invitational at 9:00 a.m.
