Wheaton's track and field squads open indoor season at Dartmouth RelaysJanuary 7, 2007 HANOVER, NH- The Wheaton College men's and women's track and field teams opened the indoor season this weekend, as action at the three-day Dartmouth College Relays came to end on Sunday in Leverone Field House. The Lyon women came in third out of 11 teams with 50 points, while the Blue and White men were sixth among 12 teams with 30 points, just two points out of the top five. The Big Green women won with 163 points, while the University of Illinois men were triumphant with 154. During her first indoor event since winning the high jump at the 2006 NCAA national championship, senior All-American Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) bested the 13-athlete high jump field with a 5' 8" leap, a personal best that automatically qualified her for the 2007 national meet. Harlow also qualified for the 60-meter hurdles finals, where she came in fourth. In the 4x400-meter relay, sophomores Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) joined freshmen Kamia Smith (Cincinnati, OH/Cincinnati County Day School) and Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) for a third-place showing, coming within 2.68 seconds of the top quartet. Karpow also played a hand in the 4x200-meter relay foursome placing fourth, as she combined with classmate Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) and freshmen Amy LaPere (Westerly, RI/Westerly) and Brittany Pierce (Andover, MA/Andover). Sophomore Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) qualified for the 60-meter dash finals, and her fourth-place showing in 7.91 left her just 0.06 seconds shy of an NCAA national meet provisional qualifying time. Classmate Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) came within 4.34 ticks of the top spot during a fifth-place 800-meter run showing, while LaPere also scored for the Lyons in the long and triple jumps. During the men's 60-meter dash, sophomore Michael Wright's (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) time of 6.97 converted into a school-record 55-meter dash time of 6.49, which trimmed Wright's twice-set program mark by 0.01 seconds. He finished third during the 60 dash finals and missed a provisional qualifying time by 0.01 ticks. Freshman Mark Cimino (Danbury, CT/Danbury) also made the 60 finals, as he placed fifth in a time of 7.08. The Lyons had two representatives in the seven-member 60-meter hurdles finals field, as freshman Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) placed second in 8.43 and sophomore Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) came in fifth at 8.56. Cimino, Powell, Wright and sophomore Donnel Matheson (Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep Country Day School) put together a third-place finish in the 4x200-meter relay, as their 1:32.03 time was 1.02 seconds short of a six-year-old school record. Wheaton's 4x400-meter relay team, comprised of Matheson, sophomore Albi Skenderi (Glendale, NY/Grover Cleveland) and freshmen Stephen Wakely (Woodstock, CT/Woodstock Academy) and Calvin Webb (Towson, MD/Towson), also scored points. Both Lyon teams return to competition Saturday at the Tufts Invitational, beginning at 11:00 a.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 1/30/07. |
