Nine Wheaton athletes prepare for NCAA Track and Field Championship

March 6, 2006

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's indoor track and field teams will combine to send nine athletes, including seven freshmen, to compete in six events at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championship this weekend at Saint Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. The two-day competition will take place Friday and Saturday.

Wheaton's women, who won five straight titles between 1999 and 2003, will have a quintet of athletes participating at the national meet. Junior Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater), who drew All-America accolades at last year's meet with a fifth-place finish in the high jump, enters this weekend's competition having tied for the highest jump in the nation at 5' 7 1/4" on February 18 at George Mason University. She will also take part in the 55-meter hurdles, tying for the 14th seed after an 8.44 showing last Friday at the Last Chance Qualifier.

Freshman Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) brings the top 400-meter dash time in Division III into the NCAA Championship, having finished in 55.99 on February 25 at the All New England Championship. Ezeigwe joins first-years Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) on Wheaton's 4x400-meter relay foursome, which is seeded sixth after a 3:54.18 showing at the All New England meet.

Wheaton sends athletes from its men's team to the national championship for the first time since 2004. Senior Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover), who earned All-America honors with a seventh-place showing in the 400-meter dash as a sophomore, is seeded 10th after a 48.21 finish in the 400M at the All New England Championship. Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) is the only freshman who qualified for the 400M event, and he takes the third-best time in the nation into the 13-athlete field after running 47.81 at the regional championship.

Cunha and Sisodia join first-year runners Victor Martinez (Exeter, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) and Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) on the 4x400-meter relay team, which ran the best time in Division III this season and set a school mark with a 3:13.31 finish on Saturday at the IC4A Championship. Wheaton is among 10 teams competing for the event title.
