Wheaton athletes capture two individual titles at national championships, women's team finishes second overallMarch 13, 2004 NORTON, MA- Two members of the Wheaton women's and men's track and field teams captured an individual national title, but the women's squad fell short of its goal of winning its sixth consecutive national championship, finishing second in team scoring with 28 points to the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh's 56.5 points. Wheaton's men finished eighth overall with 16 points. Senior Amber James (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury), a 17-time All-America performer, maintained her dominance in the 400-meter dash, winning her fourth consecutive indoor national championship in the event˜and her 15th national championship overall˜with a time of 55.62. Her performance in the event marked the fastest time in the Division III this season and a new record at the Kachel Fieldhouse, site of the championship meet. Wheaton's 4X400-meter relay team, which featured Amber James along with senior Kim Spence (Barrington, NH/Dover), junior Jessica Allegra (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) and freshman Alison Amendola (Franklin, MA/Franklin), posted a 3:53.78 time that bettered the Division III's best time of the season but merited a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Aspen James (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury) blazed to a third-place finish in the finals of the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.16. Amber James also competed in the 55-meter finals, posting a 7.42 time. Sophomore Noelle Battista (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) jumped to a fifth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 11' 5 1/4". First-year student Crystal Blamy (Walpole, NH/Fall Mountain Regional) added critical points by clearing a height of 5'5 1/4" in the high jump event, good for sixth place. Junior Kathrine Wallace (Glenmoore, PA/The Hill School) cleared the bar at 5'3 1/4", finishing twelfth. On the men's side, junior Dan Olson (Voorheesville, NY/Albany Academy) captured the national championship in the high jump with a 7' 1 3/4" leap, sealing his fourth straight national title in the event. In the finals of the 400-meter dash, sophomore Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover) posted a seventh-place finish in 50.10. Sisodia, senior Erik Benson (Southbury, CT/Pomperaugh) and juniors Patrick Freytag (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) and Adam Walker (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) competed in the finals of the 400-meter relay, finishing fifth in 3:19.06.
