Powell shatters school's 55M hurdles record at Division III New England ChampionshipFebruary 24, 2008 NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's indoor track and field sophomore Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) shattered his own school record in the 55-meter hurdles event Saturday afternoon at the Division III New England Championship at Tufts University. Competing in the Gantcher Family Sports & Convocation Center, Powell's NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time of 7.62 was good for second place. His previous school mark of 7.75 came two weeks ago at the New York City Armory. Powell, whose time is top 10 among all Division III competitors, finished just 0.04 seconds behind the event winner. With Powell placing second and providing the Lyons with eight team points, Wheaton tied for 20th among 25 scoring squads. Sophomore Mark Cimino (Danbury, CT/Danbury) was the only other Lyon male to compete at the meet, as he finished fifth in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash in 6.66 before electing not to race in the finals. For the Division III New England Championship on the women's side, the Lyons sent just two athletes to compete at Smith College's Indoor Track and Tennis Facility. Junior Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) highlighted the meet by finishing third in the pentathlon. Jamiel's tally of 2,710 points gave Wheaton six team points, which tied for 16th among 25 scoring squads. Senior Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) competed in the mile run but did not finish. The majority of the Blue and White's athletes will be in action tomorrow at the United States Track and Field (USATF) New England Championship. The meet at Harvard University is set for a 10:00 a.m. start. The Lyon women will also have a distance medley relay team at the USATF National Championship, as the quartet is slated to run in an exhibition heat in Boston's Reggie Lewis Center at 4:20 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
