Wheaton athletes earn seven All-America honors, Harlow wins high jump at NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field ChampionshipMarch 11, 2006 NORTHFIELD, MN- The indoor track and field season came to an end on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Championship at Saint Olaf College's Tostrud Center, as the Wheaton College women came in 14th with 14 points and the men tied for 22nd with eight points. Wheaton's women's finish came out of a 55-team field, which was paced by Wisconsin-Oshkosh and its 44 points. The men tied Greenville College, Rowan University and SUNY Plattsburgh, while Wisconsin-La Crosse paced the 52-school meet with 78 points. Junior Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) not only defended her All-America status in the high jump but was the national champion after recording the highest leap in Division III this winter. Harlow paced the 15-athlete field with a 5' 7 3/4" performance, which was 1 1/4 inches better than the second-place finisher and also set a Tostrud Center record by exactly two inches. Freshman Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) also earned All-America honors with a fifth-place 400-meter dash finish in 57.05, which bettered her trials time by 0.20 seconds. Ezeigwe joined first-years Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) as Wheaton's 4x400-meter relay placed ninth in 4:01.00. For the men, freshman Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) nabbed All-America honors after a fourth-place finish during the 400-meter dash in 48.67. The lone underclassman in the eight-athlete field improved upon his trials time by nearly a third of a second. Cunha, senior Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover) and freshmen Victor Martinez (Exeter, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) and Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) finished the 4x400-meter relay in sixth at 3:20.30, each earning All-America accolades. With the indoor season complete, Wheaton turns its attention toward the outdoor campaign, which begins next weekend at the Aztec Classic. The two-day competition, which starts Friday, will be held at San Diego State University. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 1/30/07. |
