Wheaton opens season at Dartmouth Relays, women capture seventh place

January 9, 2005

HANOVER, NH- The Wheaton College men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2005 season at the 36th annual Dartmouth Relays Sunday afternoon, as the women's squad finished seventh out of 29 scoring teams with 24 points. The Lyon men did not register a team score.

Leading the way for the women was junior Noelle Battista's (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) 11' 5 3/4" performance in the pole vault. The showing was good enough for a NCAA Division III national meet provisional qualifying standard and second place in the meet overall.

The Blue and White recorded 10 points in the high jump, as sophomore Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) and senior Kathrine Wallace (Glenmoore, PA/The Hill School) finished third and fourth, respectively, with their provisional qualifying heights of 5' 6".

The Lyons posted fifth and sixth-place marks in the 4x400-meter relay, while freshman Joell Whitley (Magnolia, NJ/Triton Regional) rounded out the scoring with a 17' 3/4" and fifth-place showing in the long jump. Whitley also advanced to the semifinals of the 60-meter dash in 8.05.

Junior Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover) recorded the men's best finish on the day with a 12th-place standing in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 51.86. Classmate Ross Kahill (South Portland, ME/South Portland) registered a 17th-place showing in the 800-meter run in 2:07.21, while senior Jamaal Rawls-Payton (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) just missed qualifying for the 60-meter hurdle finals, finishing the semifinal heat in the ninth position with a time of 9.00.

Both squads return to action on Saturday, January 15, as Wheaton will participate in both the Boston University Invitational and Tufts Invitational. The competitions are slated for 9:00 a.m. starts.
