ECAC DIVISION III FIELD HOCKEY TOURNAMENT - Lyons fall short of Saint Joseph's in continuation of penalty-stroke shootout

November 9, 2007

HENNIKER, NH--- The fourth-seeded Wheaton College field hockey team saw its season come to a close Friday afternoon at New England College, as the Lyons fell one penalty-stroke goal short of fifth seed Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a shootout that was a continuation of Wednesday's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament first-round game at Wheaton.

On Wednesday, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw following 70 minutes of regulation and two 15-minute overtimes. After the first round of five penalty strokes, the teams were tied at two apiece. Heading into what should have been the second round of five, the teams only took two strokes apiece, thus leaving the game incomplete.

Trailing in strokes by a count of 3-2 coming into today, Wheaton senior co-captain Kim Anson (Washington, CT/Shepaug Valley) knotted the score with the first shot. After freshman Kayla Nowell (Bridgton, ME/Lake Region) gave the Monks the lead back, Lyon senior co-captain Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) had her attempt stopped by freshman goalie Kathleen Simoes (Wakefield, MA/Bishop Fenwick).

Sophomore Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY/Guilderland) then clinched the win for Saint Joseph's by converting the next stroke for a 5-3 advantage. Playing the round of five to completion, Wheaton senior Lyndsie Ryalls (Branford, CT/Branford) pushed the score to 5-4, as Lyon first-year keeper Cameron Abel (Windham, NH/Salem) turned aside a final shot from junior Gina Gaetani (Auburn, ME/Edward Little) to end play.

With the outcome listed as a 2-1 loss officially, Wheaton finishes the fall with a 13-7 record, while 13-6 Saint Joseph's advances to tomorrow's semifinal round with a home game against number eight Plymouth State University.
