Three Lyons named to NEWMAC All-Conference teams for second straight year

November 6, 2007

WORCESTER, MA- For the second consecutive year, three Wheaton College field hockey players were named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference teams during Tuesday's postseason meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

Senior co-captains Kim Anson (Washington, CT/Shepaug Valley) and Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) became Wheaton's first tandem selected to the first team since the league established multiple all-conference squads in 2002. The award marked Dimick's second straight on the first squad and third all-league honor overall, while Anson enjoys her first NEWMAC laurel. Junior Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) was voted to the second team for the second straight year.

As a forward, Dimick led all NEWMAC players during conference play with 22 points and eight assists while tying with two others for the lead in goals with seven. During all regular season games, she led all league players with 11 assists, tied for first with 43 points and was one goal off the lead with 16 tallies. Dimick is tied for fourth with four game-winning goals, has tallied at least one point in 12 games and has contributed to more than one goal in eight contests. This year, she broke the program's career points (104) and assists (26) records and tied the single-season assists mark.

Anson has started all 19 games in a backfield that primarily features two sophomores, one freshman back and a first-year goalie. The Lyons allowed only 1.11 goals per game in league play with three shutouts. During the regular season, Anson helped Wheaton shut out six teams while holding three others to one tally. In the Blue and White's upset of nationally-ranked Springfield College on October 13, she assisted the game-winning goal. Anson tied for ninth in the NEWMAC in assists during league play.

Ardito, who is an attacker, is second on the team behind Dimick with nine goals, eight assists and 26 points, but her five game-winners are tops on the squad. Scoring the game-winning tally in each of Wheaton's first four conference victories, her quartet of game-winners ranked first in the NEWMAC during league play. Ardito tied for fifth against league teams in goals (5), tied for seventh in points (12) and tied Anson for ninth in assists. With starts in all 19 games, she has tallied at least one point in 10 contests. Among all NEWMAC players during the regular season, Ardito tied for second in game-winners, tied for fifth in assists, tied for eighth in points and was ninth in goals.

After advancing to its second consecutive NEWMAC Tournament semifinal this past weekend, Wheaton learned it was selected as the fourth seed for the upcoming eight-team Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. At 13-6 overall, the Lyons begin a quest for their first ECAC title tomorrow afternoon against fifth seed Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Clark Field at 2:00 p.m. The semifinals and final will be held on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at the highest remaining seeds.
