Lyons fall to unbeaten Wellesley, 2-0 in NEWMAC field hockey actionOctober 16, 2007 WELLESLEY, MA- The Wheaton College field hockey team fell into a third-place tie in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) standings after suffering a 2-0 loss at Wellesley College on Tuesday, just the Lyons' second loss in seven games. Wheaton is now 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC, tied with Springfield College, while Wellesley is 11-3 and remains tied for the top spot at 6-0. Each team had two penalty corners in a scoreless first half, but Wellesley's 8-1 shot advantage was neutralized by freshman keeper Cameron Abel's (Windham, NH/Salem) five saves. In the second stanza, the Lyons held a 4-2 corners edge and only trailed in shots, 8-6. Wheaton nearly took the lead in the 52nd minute but was denied by a Wellesley defensive save. The Blue struck in the 54th minute, as freshman Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI/Arrowhead) converted sophomore Callie Lekas' (Brewster, MA/Bancroft School) penalty-corner pass into a goal. With just 2:05 remaining in regulation, the tandem again joined to make it 2-0 on Scudder's second marker. Abel finished with nine saves for the Lyons, while senior forward Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) and sophomore back Andria Laroche (Skowhegan, ME/Skowhegan Area) each made defensive saves in the second stanza. Junior Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA/Saint Stephen's and Saint Agnes School) stopped three shots for the Blue, while classmate back Becca Leclerc (Avon, CT/Middletown) and freshman Kathryn Frett (Hallowell, ME/Hall-Dale) each had defensive saves. Wellesley finished with a 16-7 advantage in shots, while Wheaton held a 6-4 edge in corners. Wheaton plays its final two regular season games at home, beginning with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Mount Holyoke College on Saturday during Homecoming weekend.
