Lyons amass five second-half goals, Dimick breaks assist mark at Smith

September 29, 2007

NORTHAMPTON, MA- Senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) became the Wheaton College field hockey program's all-time assists leader Saturday at Smith College, as her two goals and three assists helped the Lyons turn a slim one-goal halftime edge into a 6-0 victory in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

Extending their winning streak to three while collecting their fifth shutout, the Lyons improved to 8-3 on the season and 2-0 in the NEWMAC. The Pioneers fall to 2-6 and 1-1.

Dimick played a hand in five of Wheaton's six goals this afternoon, pushing her career totals to 34 goals, 23 assists and 91 points. She is second in the program's annals for each goals and points. Dimick assisted junior Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) for the game-winner 9:06 into play. Ardito is now tied for third all time with 19 assists and is fourth with 59 points.

The Lyons blew the game open in the second frame, rattling off three straight within a 3:04 span. Dimick earned the helpers on goals from freshman Jessica Strock (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) and sophomore Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) in the 44th and 46th minutes, respectively, with the Block goal coming off a penalty corner. Ardito knocked home her second goal of the day on an unassisted tally in the 47th minute.

Dimick got into the scoring act with less than 12 minutes to play, as she posted an unassisted goal on a corner after a shot came off the goalie's pads. Ardito and Dimick teamed up for Wheaton's sixth goal in the waning minutes, as Dimick found the back of the cage for her seventh point at 63:45. The Lyons held advantages of 27-12 in shots and 16-4 in penalty corners.

Freshman Cameron Abel (Windham, NH/Salem) picked up the win in the cage for Wheaton with eight saves, while sophomore Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) came on in relief and posted one stop in 15:54. For Smith, freshman Courtney Murphy (Florence, MA/Northampton) accounted for 14 saves.

The Lyons continue league play on the road this Tuesday at Babson College in a 7:00 p.m. start.
