Field hockey falls to third-ranked Bowdoin in non-conference playSeptember 9, 2007 NORTON, MA- Four different players scored for nationally-ranked Bowdoin College as the Wheaton College field hockey team dropped a 5-0 non-conference decision on Sunday at Clark Field. The Lyons are now 3-2, while the Polar Bears, who are third in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, improved to 2-0. Bowdoin scored within the first two minutes of play and eventually led by three goals midway through the opening half. Junior Lindsay McNamara (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) took classmate Julia King's (Yarmouth, ME/Saint Mark's) pass and deposited the eventual game-winner with 1:26 gone, as McNamara's shot trickled into the goal past diving freshman keeper Cameron Abel (Windham, NH/Salem). Sophomore Shavonne Lord (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) converted a King assist at 9:25, and King tallied unassisted with 13:13 remaining before the half on a solo effort off a penalty corner pass. Freshman Ingrid Oelschlager (Roanoke, VA/Phillips Exeter Academy) scored 1:06 before halftime, and McNamara capped the offensive output with a goal 14:13 into the second stanza. Bowdoin ended up holding advantages of 23-4 in shots and 10-3 in penalty corners. Abel made seven saves in more than 49 minutes as the first of three Wheaton keepers, and sophomore Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) followed with two stops in nearly 10 minutes. Junior Emileigh Mercer (Newton, MA/Newton North) went untested in nearly 57 minutes to earn the win, while freshman Emily Neilson (Chatham, PA/Taft) stopped two shots in relief.
