Wheaton falls for first time, drops 2-0 decision at Endicott

September 8, 2007

BEVERLY, MA- In a rematch of last year's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament title game, the Wheaton College field hockey team came up short at Endicott College, 2-0 on Saturday. It was the Lyons' first loss in four games this year and marked the first time in 30 games dating back to October 2005 that they were blanked. The Gulls are 2-0.

Despite Wheaton holding advantages of 9-7 in shots and 6-1 in penalty corners during the first half, Endicott took a 2-0 lead into intermission after tallying twice during a 44-second span late in the period. Senior Jennifer Rheaume (Blackstone, MA/Blackstone-Millville Regional) scored first, as her initial shot was stopped by freshman keeper Cameron Abel (Windham, NH/Salem), but Rheaume collected the rebound and tallied at 1:25. Sophomore Megan McBride (Saugus, MA/Saugus) made it 2-0 with 41 ticks left.

Wheaton controlled the second half on paper but could not break through, recording a 9-2 advantage in shots and collecting 12 of the half's 16 penalty corners. Senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) nearly cut the Lyons' deficit in half midway through the period, but a marker she netted was called back. Gull junior Jennifer Beech (Devonshire, Bermuda/Saltas Grammar) also made a pair of defensive saves during the waning minutes of regulation.

Abel made five saves and suffered her first collegiate loss, while junior Chelsea DeFeo (York, ME/York) turned aside nine shots for the Gulls. Beech finished with a trio of defensive saves. Wheaton held final advantages of 18-9 in shots and 18-5 in corners.

The Lyons return home tomorrow to face Bowdoin College, which is ranked third in the country by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Clark Field.
